School Health Advisory Council

Our Mission

The mission of the Lake Local Schools Health Advisory Council is to teach the community the value of developing healthful life-long habits in order to achieve the nutritional, physical, and emotional balance necessary for a life of health, happiness, and longevity.

What We Have Done and Are Doing

*Instituted the Wellness Policy beginning with the 2006-2007 school year
*Provide a list of ideas for “Healthy Snacks” to encourage students/ parents to make an intentional plan for
  healthy eating.
*Encourage classroom activity/ exercises in the elementary buildings in order to provide 30 minutes of
  additional activity per week.
*Produced and provided an exercise video to each elementary classroom teacher for use during activity time.
*Enforced the law stating that carbonated beverages cannot be sold during lunch hours, and had timers put
  on the soda pop machines.
*Food Services is offering more foods with greater nutritional value, as well as a balanced choice menu.
*Candy has been removed from the food service lines.
*Healthier snacks have taken their place in the vending machines.
*We put on an event for MS and elementary students called “Game On”, and have hopes to do the event
  again during  PE classes.
*Fruit and Veggie Week for Lake Elementary where the students had the opportunity to try a variety of
uncommon fruits and vegetables; this was funded with grant money.
*Fruit and Veggie Week coordinated with a color of the day, and the parents provide the fruits and
  vegetables for their own children.
*”Walk Fit Club” was developed to provide a regular source of exercise which required little coordination
for student who are non-athletic, or not participating in sports.
*Videos, Dynabands, and exercise mats were purchased for staff use if desired.
*”Fly Into Fitness” was resumed for the staff, and is an incentive based exercise program.
*Walking program was initiated at Lake Elementary- this was also incentive based.
*Elementary PE teacher created valuable information to the teachers in the way of a newsletter.
*Created an annual event called the  Lake Township 5K Community Fun Walk/ Run.
*The students at Lake Elementary had a school wide health fair, and each classroom decorated their doors to
educate the rest of the student body on  their chosen health topic.
*Contributed to the windbreak planted along the track which will also  assist in protection for the
  playground.
*Provide free health screenings  (blood pressure, blood glucose, total cholesterol, bone density) to our
  school district staff.
*Fundraising through the “Go Green With Lake” recycling Program.  (old electronics (cell phones, digital cameras, laptop computers, iPods, etc.)

Things We Would Like To Do

*Have milk vending machines available to students
*Have either refrigerated vending containing snacks for students after school, or be able to provide after-
school snacks, such as sandwiches, fruits, veggies, pretzels, and bottled water.
*Continue to offer health screenings to the staff
*Continue to build up our Community Fun Walk/ Run and have it be an event everyone looks forward to
  every year.
*Continue the Walk Fit Club
*Provide Fruit and Veggie Week to the Middle School and High School students.
*Provide a health fair and health screening to the high school seniors.
