Flipping the school day

A recommendation will be made at the March 27, 2019 Lake Local Schools Board of Education meeting to change the start and end times of the school day for our students, beginning with the 2019-2020 school year. The proposal will ask for Lake Elementary School to begin at 8:10 a.m. and end at 2:40 p.m. Lake Middle School and Lake High School students would start at 8:45 a.m. and the final bell would ring at 3:30 p.m.

The recommendation is based on information gathered by a committee of teachers and parents over the past year.  Their recommendation summary outlined the benefits and possible negative effects of school day hours for different child age groups. The committee studied test scores, attendance, behavior, graduation rate, safety, physical and mental health, and they consulted with another school district who flipped the school day hours. Additionally, the group considered the results of sleep habit surveys taken by our students last year. From a medical viewpoint, Dr. Michael Neeb and Dr. Ramalinga Reddy, Directors of the Mercy Health Children’s Hospital Sleep Disorder Program, enthusiastically endorse this change for our students.

If the Lake Board of Education votes to implement the time changes, we will schedule a date and time for a public meeting. This meeting will allow parents to hear our plans for child care, transportation, Penta Career Center, athletics, and other potential effects of changing the start and end times of the school day.
