Gifted Services

Gifted Services

The Lake Local School District strives to meet the needs of all students, and provides services to learners with gifted abilities. Students identified as gifted learners require specially designed instruction. These students possess superior skills in the areas of cognitive ability, academic achievement, creativity, and the visual and performing arts.  While the district utilizes both acceleration and enrichment to meet the academic needs of the students, specific attention is paid to meeting their social-emotional needs.

Gifted services are implemented in various instructional settings. Most of our students receive a great deal of instruction in the general education classroom in which teachers differentiate their instruction to meet the needs of each student.  Some students accelerate through the curriculum by receiving subject area instruction in general education classrooms above their current grade level, and others receive appropriately challenging instruction in a classroom or course specifically designed for gifted learners. Additionally, a gifted intervention specialist works to develop engaging activities for identified students to supplement the classroom environment.

Students in the Lake Local School District are assessed in second and fifth grade for superior cognitive ability, specific academic ability, creative thinking ability, and visual or performing arts. The district’s assessment instruments for screening and identification are in accordance with Ohio Law and can be located via the Ohio Department of Education website. Children may be referred by parents, teachers, or self-referral for possible gifted identification.
